Summer is always a great opportunity to check over your home and undertake any maintenance to help avoid costly repairs, protect your home and help keep you and your loved ones safe. Not only does will this help keep your home comfortable, but many policies exclude damage caused by wear and tear, so regular upkeep may help you to avoid any nasty surprises if you need to claim.

The lighter days gives us a great opportunity to get outside and have a good look at the exterior of your property to check for any loose roof tiles and the overall roof condition, repoint any crumbling on the brickwork, and clear gutters and drainage holes to prevent blockages. Also check the quality of your exterior paint work as peeling paint can expose your woodwork to moisture, which left untreated can lead to rot.

After a long and very wet winter, take a walk around your garden with your garden tools to help prevent any problems before they start. Trim back overhanging branches which may block gutters or damage the roof. Have a check of the health and stability of trees and seek professional advice if needed.

Moss and Algae growth can make surfaces slippery and unsafe, so a good clean up of these areas can help prevent slips and trips.

This applies all year round, but check your pipework for leaks around your sinks and toilets and fix them quickly. Small leaks can lead to damp, mould and extensive water damage which can be expensive to repair. A regular clean of your drains can prevent build up and blockages from within your sinks and help to prevent escape of water.

Regularly cleaning can help keep your windows in a good state of repair and prevents dirt from early signs of damage such as cracks, rot or warping. Ensure you check the seals and quality of the frames itself as these may need regular maintenance to keep out moisture.

Take a look in your loft to check for signs of leaks or damage from the winter. 2026 has seen some of the wettest months on record so far, so have a look for damp patches or water stains which can indicate issues. Loft insulation doesn’t just help to keep your home warm in the winter, it also helps keep it cooler in the summer – so a check your insulation for any patches or thinning areas and consider topping it up, just make sure it doesn’t block any vents.
